What makes a Beautiful Cottage Garden?

The cottage style garden is a great garden for all those plantaholics out there.

There is hardly any structure, the garden will look unrestrained and free flowing.

You will find overflowing garden beds that spill over to rocky pathways.

Lots of colour and texture and repitition that will help to create harmony and add lines to draw the eye through the design of the Cottage Garden.


What plants go into to make up a Cottage Garden?

As long as you have a diverse mixture of Annuals, Perennials, Shrubs and flowering trees and smaller trees you are on your way to the perfect Cottage Garden. Adding in some vines will help to soften any fences or blank walls that you have and will create a romantic feel to the garden.

A focal point that would tie all your elements of a cottage garden together would be a garden arch or garden seat. Making sure that your structures are still in theme with this particular style.

Hardscaping using boulders laid out naturally are good flower companions.

In addition picket fence as a back drop will look great in the Cottage Garden.

If you create a pathway these willl need to be in proportion to the garden size and garden beds. Lawns are normally kept to a minimum this would allow maximum use flowers and ornaments. Cottage Gardens accomodate a large variety of plants so the garden beds need to be well prepared before planting, mulch is great to lower the maintenance of a cottage garden and will keep the plants happy. It will need to be well watered and will require regular pruning. The Cottage Garden colors will look amazing with the seasonal changes.
